At Rowan Tree Primary School, we are passionate about creating confident, enthusiastic readers who carry a love for books throughout their lives. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking new opportunities, enhancing imagination, and fostering independent, lifelong learning. To give our children the strongest start on their reading journey, we have chosen the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme, which we use across all year groups at Rowan Tree.
Why Read Write Inc.?
Read Write Inc. is a proven phonics-based programme designed to help children learn to read and write quickly and confidently. By focusing on phonics, comprehension, and spelling, it equips our pupils with essential literacy skills, allowing them to become fluent readers and articulate writers. The structured approach ensures that children not only learn to read words but also develop a deep understanding of the text they read.
Read Write Inc. at Rowan Tree Primary
We begin teaching Read Write Inc. in Reception and continue its use through to Year 6, ensuring that every child, no matter their age or ability, benefits from this structured approach to literacy. Throughout the school, children are grouped by ability and receive daily lessons from staff trained in RWI methods. Regular assessments allow us to adjust groupings and pace to meet each child's individual needs, ensuring steady progress as they move through the year groups.
What Makes Read Write Inc. Special?
The programme is designed to help children:
- Master the sounds: Children learn the 44 key sounds in the English language, starting with simple sounds and progressing to more complex ones.
- Blend sounds to read words: Using "Fred Talk," children are taught to break down words into their component sounds, then blend them to read smoothly.
- Understand and enjoy books: As they develop fluency, children move on to lively stories filled with words they can decode, helping to build both comprehension and a love of reading.
- Spell effortlessly: By learning how to write the sounds they hear, children quickly become confident spellers, able to focus on the content of their writing rather than the mechanics of spelling.
Rowan Tree's Unique Approach
At Rowan Tree, we believe that fostering a love of reading goes hand-in-hand with teaching phonics. To support this, we ensure that:
- Regular Parent Workshops hosted by our two Literacy Leads at no cost to parents/carers
- Every child reads daily, both at home and at school, to develop fluency and enjoyment.
- Books are accessible to all, with a wide range of engaging texts that spark curiosity and creativity.
- Parents are partners in their child’s reading journey, with regular updates and advice on how to support reading at home.
Key Teaching Principles at Rowan Tree
The five guiding principles of Read Write Inc. shape every phonics lesson at Rowan Tree:
- Purpose: Every activity is meaningful, and children know exactly what they are learning and why.
- Participation: All children are actively involved throughout the lessons, often working in pairs to support one another.
- Praise: We celebrate effort and progress, motivating children to keep improving.
- Pace: Lessons are energetic and focused, ensuring children are always engaged.
- Passion: Our teachers bring enthusiasm and creativity to every session, inspiring a genuine love for learning.
Supporting Your Child's Reading Journey
We encourage all parents to support their child's learning at home by practising Fred Talk, where children sound out and blend words such as "s-a-t" (sat) or "b-r-i-ck" (brick). Additionally, reading stories together and discussing books is a fantastic way to nurture a lifelong love of reading.
At Rowan Tree Primary School, we are proud to provide a supportive and enriching reading environment. If you have any questions or would like more information about Read Write Inc., please reach out to our dedicated RWI Lead Teacher, [Insert Name], through the school office.
Together, we will help your child grow into a confident, joyful reader ready to explore the world of books!
